Description

This course explores a variety of electronic applications used in the promotion of healthy behavior, focusing on cases relating to physical health (electronic cigarettes), mental health (apps and wearables), and social health (e-mediation). In each of these areas, experts will share cutting-edge scientific knowledge and demonstrate some of the latest e-applications to boost healthy behavior.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, the course reading is sourced from scientific journals and therefore an undergraduate level of reading skills would be of benefit.

Duration and Work Load

The course will run over a period of 5 weeks.The course has 4 main modules. Each week a new module will become available except for the last module 'FAQ and closing', which will become available  2 weeks after the e-Mediation module. During this extra week the course team will record all the videos in which we answers the most popular and interesting questions you provided.

Assigned work load per session will vary according to topic and reading material, but on average, students should expect to dedicate 4-5 hours per week.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

After the course, you will be able to objectively evaluate the pros and cons of various e-based health-promotion innovations, and effectively use some of these e-channels to promote healthy behavior.

Course Structure

The course consists of 5 modules:

1) Introduction

This module introduces you to the content and the requirements of the course. Secondly, an overview of the different components and functionalities of the edX platform will be given.

2) e-Cigarette

Promoting physical health. In this module, you will learn about the potential implications of e-cigarettes as a Tobacco Harm Reduction Strategy. You will gain contemporary scientific knowledge about the safety, efficacy, and potential health threats of using e-cigarettes.

3) e-Mental health

Promoting mental health. In this module, you will learn about innovations in online, mobile and wearable tools used in mental healthcare (a rapidly expanding field), as well as their potential advantages and disadvantages.

4) e-Mediation

Promoting social health. In this module, you will learn about the core principles of mediation, and how you can use electronic communication to prevent escalation and promote conflict resolution during the mediation process.

5) FAQ and closing

It is you who gets to decide which questions and topics will be addressed by the staff at the end of our MOOC. This module also contains a closing video and an post survey.
