Q1: I'm having difficulties with the site.

Answer:
If you are having technical difficulties, you can reach out using the sticky thread "Technical Issues" in the Discussion Forum. If you are having difficulty with the course itself use the sticky thread "General", or if you have a topic specific question use "Course Question" thread. It is also worthwhile to look at edX course of DemoX, which shows you how to take a course on the edX platform.

Q2: I don't know how to navigate.

Answer:
There are navigation tabs at the top of the page:

Q3: What am I supposed to do?

Answer:
In each topic week, you will be presented with a set of videos and materials for your viewing. We have incorporated discussion areas and questions for you to test your knowledge. At the end of each topic, you will be presented with an "End-of-Topic" test. The in-topic interactions and End-of-Topic tests are worth 50% each towards your final grade.

Q4: Are there any textbooks?

Answer:
There are no official textbooks but a reference book is provided in this course.

Q5: I'm having technical difficulties with completing the Discussion sections. It asks for me to check the "Complete" box but I cannot see it.

Answer:
Try accessing it from a computer or use the web browser on your mobile to access the edX platform instead of using the app. If you're still having difficulties, or if you cannot gain access to a computer, leave a note in discussion forum under the "Technical Issues" thread.

Q6: There are assessments that says it is not available on my mobile!

Answer:
In this case, try accessing it from a computer or use the web browser to access the edX platform instead of using the mobile app. If you're still having difficulties, or if you cannot gain access to a computer, leave a note in discussion forum under the "Technical Issues" thread.

Q7: There's something wrong with the drag-and-drop questions. I can't see the whole picture and every time I swipe on my mobile, it brings me to the next section!

Answer:
The image is most likely to be large, try viewing it in landscape mode or view the assessment from the web browser on your phone (or computer).

Tip for viewing using mobile app: keep a point of contact stationary on the image and add an extra point of contact for moving the picture (an action similar to pinch zoom on the mobile but keep one finger stationary).

If you're still having difficulties, or if you cannot gain access to a computer, leave a note in discussion forum under the "Technical Issues" thread.

Q8: I keep getting the same answer in those Peer Instruction questions!

Answer:
The first time you attempt to do the problem, you will be answering with your initial thoughts. Then you will be given a list of reasons given by your peers, at which point you can change your answers. At the Results, you can view your initial response and your second response after reading other students' reasons. Sometimes, your initial answer and your second response is the same, hence you will see the answer twice. For best experience with this activity, use a computer web browser for access.

Q9: How come some references do not have hyperlinks?

Answer:
References with hyperlinks are generally freely accessible, should you wish to find out more about the subjects. Those without hyperlinks are generally papers located within a journal and may require payment of access. However, you do not need to actually read the paper to pass this course.

Q10: Are there captions/subtitles to the videos?

Answer:
English subtitles are available on all the videos, some videos may automatically provide the subtitles. Depending on the device used, the methods for enabling the subtitles are as follows:

  • If using YouTube player on mobile app: Enable subtitles using the menu on the upper right corner and select "Closed Caption". There are 2 choices, "English" and "English (Automatic)", choose "English" for the subtitles.
  • If using YouTube player through mobile web browsers: Enable subtitles using the "CC" icon on bottom right hand corner of the video player. There are 2 choices, "English" and "English (Automatic)", choose "English" for the subtitles.
  • If viewing on PC via edX: The video will be displayed through an embedded YouTube video player. Enable subtitles using the "CC" icon on the bottom right hand corner of the video player. Choose "English" for subtitles.
  • If viewing using edX mobile app: Click on the "Settings" icon on the bottom right hand corner of the player, select "Closed Captions" and choose "English".

Q11: I’ve answered the question, but it is not shown in the Progress page.

Answer
Please click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the question to ensure you have submitted your answer. If problem persists, please contact our staff using the discussion sticky thread "Technical Issues".

Q12The display of information is difficult to read using the edX mobile app.

Answer:
Try viewing using Landscape mode on your phone, alternatively view the material using a computer web browser. Some images are downloadable via access in the "Image Download" below the image.

Q13: I see 2 sets of captions on screen.

Answer:
On some of the videos, it has been explicitly stated that subtitles are provided on screen due to poor audio quality. In such videos, you may see 2 sets of captions because the "Closed Caption" function has been enabled in your video player (for both browser and mobile version). To avoid this, disable "Closed Caption" on the video player. If there are videos, where subtitles are provided on screen is stated, showing same problem, please inform us by using the sticky thread "Technical Issues" in the Discussion Forum.

Q14: I can't complete the drag-and-drop (picture) questions through the mobile app, it does not display the whole image.

Answer:
This may be due to the image size. For most small screened mobile (5.1 Inch or smaller), it is advised to use landscape mode to attempt the question. However, it would be best to attempt these questions using a web browser (via edx.org instead of the app).
