What do I do if the online activities do not work?

When accessing the course materials and attempting activities, please use the Google Chrome browser whenever you can. If you are still experiencing repeated and specific technical problems, contact edX directly for support using the 'Help tab' located at the top left of your screen.

Why is a Professional Education course paid opposed to a MOOC?

We created MOOCs with joy and liked the fact that so many learners joined the course. We noticed that learners wanted an additional course with more advanced courseware. To create such a course requires a lot of expenses due to development and research. We invest a big chunk of our research time and resources. We involve much of our and other staff time, and that needs a fair compensation. Therefore we ask a price to join this course to cover some of the expenses. However, we want to give people the opportunity to join the course so the price stayed relatively low. We believe in accesibility responsibility and that passion is more important than money.

What makes this course a ‘must do’ for engineers?

Basically three things. Locus: all cases are about engineering projects. Focus: we have been working with engineers and scientists for many years; we understand their mind-set, specific questions and needs. The challenges this course highlights are technology-dominated.

Do I really have to be an engineer?

Yes. Why? We want to connect people with more or less similar mind-sets and experiences. Having said that….biologist and 20 years in engineering? You are welcome! Bachelor in Communication? We think there may be more appropriate courses in Leadership for you!

Will this course uniquely probe and develop my technical skills?

No. We assume these are sufficiently probed and developed ‘on the job’ - this course is about that other mind-set, that often conflicts with your technical analytical mind-set.

Can I download the subtitle/captions text from the videos?

Yes. Under each video, you should see a box that says 'Download transcript'. This allows you to download the subtitle text as an .srt file or .txt file. Choose the version you would like and then click 'Download transcript' for it to begin downloading. You can also copy/paste the captions that appear to the right of the video when you have the closed captioning button selected within edX.

How is the course assessed?

This course includes three types of assessments: assignments, exercises and questionnaires. Assignments are graded, exercises and questionnaires are not.

Graded assignments

Assignments

During the course you will encounter seven assignments. These assignments will together make up 100% of your grade for this ProfEd. There are three types of assignments:

  1. Multiple choice questions – This questions will automatically be graded via the edX platform.
  2. Peer-assessed assignment – Peer assessment entails that your peers, your fellow students, will grade your assignments based on the grading criteria provided for the assignment. In academia peer assessment is an often used tool to ensure the quality of academic work. In this course you will learn how to grade your peers and reflect on those grades. We kindly ask you to do your reviews seriously and provide your peers with feedback you would consider helpful and constructive yourself.
  3. Self-assessed assignment – Self-assessment entails that you yourself have to assign the grade you think your assignment deserves based on the grading criteria provided for the assignment. You will be given examples on how to grade your assignment first before you have to grade your own assignment.

Non-graded assignments

Exercises

In order to help you understand some parts of this course, it can be helpful to practise. Therefore this ProfEd contains exercises. In this exercises you will apply the content you just learned to your own situation or a fictive case. We highly recommend to do the exercises. However, some exercises can be seen as optional, and when this is the case this is stated clearly above the exercise.

Questionnaires

Throughout the course you will be asked to participate in questionnaires. These questionnaires serve two purposes: (1) critically reflect on the material you have just been exposed to, and (2) create a database of perceptions on different aspects of leadership. At the start of the MOOC, you will be asked whether or not your responses may be used for academic research. If you do not decline this request, your responses can be anonymously analysed for academic research. Results will be aggregated to the group level, so personal information will not be coupled to individual responses. Responses will certainly not be shared with any third parties.

When do I get a passing grade?

This course uses a pass/fail structure. To pass the course you need to obtain at least 60% of the total amount of points that can be earned. Deadlines are written as dd/mm/yyyy. To find out the day/time where you are, see time zone converter.

How can I check my current grade in the course?

The easiest way to see your current mark in the course is by visiting the Progress tab found at the top of every page. When you visit that tab, you will see a chart at the top of the page that shows your progress in all graded assignments in the course. You will also see a vertical listing of all of the sections of the course, activities and graded assignments.

How do I interact with my fellow students?

The participants of this ProfEd come from different backgrounds and are in different stages of their career. Note that the course language is English, we therefore ask you to post in the English language only. We ask you to be respectful to participants coming from different cultures or being less / more experienced with leadership. Please be judgemental free in your feedback to one other, be analytical and helpful, especially when participating in the discussion forum. We all can learn from each other, and we look forward to many interesting discussions and learning moments.

What do I do if I spot what I think may be an error in the content?

If you spot an error, please let us know via the discussion board. Be sure to title the thread specifically about the error that you wish to discuss/enquire about. It would also be helpful if you included ‘staff’ somewhere in the title, too. We can then fix up any errors as soon as possible (or perhaps explain why a perceived error is not an actual error in this case). Thank you for your attentiveness.

When does the course end?

The last day of Advanced Leadership for Engineer is 26 April 2017.  Make sure you finished all the assignments before this date.
