Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't video playing? how can I get help?

If you're having a problem playing a video, please let us know what browser and which version you are using, and any other technical detail you can provide (like: Chrome version 32). That will help us troubleshoot the problem more effectively.

How does the grading work?

The best place to find information on grading is the course syllabus, which you can find in the menu at the top of every page (click “Syllabus”). You can see your own progress in the "Progress" tab. Participation check questions (1 each week) count for 20% of your grade, short assignments in weeks 1, 5 and 10 count for a total of 20%, and the Cerego sets are 60%. You only need to reach 60% total to pass, and you can see how close you are in the righthand bar on your progress page.

Do we have to get to 100% on Cerego?

It is not necessary to get to 100% memory permanence in any Cerego set, although if you do you will be more likely to retain the information for longer. You need to earn 60% total across all activities, which includes participation check questions and short assignments. So if you get only to 60% on the Cerego sets and answer the other questions, that would be plenty to earn a certificate.

Why was this video taken down?

We felt that it was extremely important to include musical excerpts in a course of this nature. Therefore, the videos are rich with musical examples. To balance the artists' rights with the principles of fair use and open access to education, we have had to limit the time that most videos will be posted. You can still download a transcript of the video, with written information on the musical excerpts discussed, and all other aspects of the original unit, such as summaries, remain the same.
