What is Cerego?

Cerego is a tool to learn faster, remember longer, and quantify what you know.  Cerego refreshes your memory for each item just as it’s about to fade by tracking your performance, measuring pace, response-time, and accuracy to predict the best time to review.

The result is a personalized experience that leads to long-term retention - and a learning engine that gets more effective the more you use it.

Why do I keep seeing the same items when I study?

Cerego removes the burden of deciding what and when to study - we choose the right items for you each time you use the system. Sometimes these are new items, other times these are items you’ve seen before that we predict you need to review. At times, it might feel like you’re seeing the same items over and over again - this is our way of making sure you are retaining this information. Over time, you’ll see items less and less often.

What are "Fading" memories?

Fading memories are pieces of information that you have previously learned, and that we predict you are in the process of forgetting right now.  Selecting fading memories for a study session means you will review these items. If you select a session of 5, 10 or 20 items, you’ll still see some fading memories alongside new ones.

Should I learn 5, 10, or 20 items at a time?

This depends on how much time you have to study.  5 items sessions are quick and should take a few minutes to complete. If you’d like more material at once, you can choose a larger size - it’s just a matter of preference. Sessions typically blend new and review items (until you’ve seen all new items).

How long does it take to get items to Level 3?

The time it takes to get an item to goal will vary for each person, and for each item.  Each level requires about the same amount of work, but reviews are spaced further apart as you progress.  Items in level 1 will require frequent reviews. In higher levels, items will build greater memory permanence with longer review intervals.

Assuming you answer everything perfectly, the review intervals will correspond roughly to the following schedule: 6 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, etc. Please note that you are expected to answer incorrectly sometimes - this is part of the learning process. Your review schedule will be adjusted accordingly based on your performance, but all you need to do to boost your memory permanence (and score) is to keep studying!

Cramming does not unlock levels faster; follow the review schedule for highest efficiency.  On average, you’ll need to review an item for a few minutes (in total) to get all the way to goal - but that few minutes work will be distributed over several weeks.   We estimate that you’ll review each item about 8-10 times over the course of 4 weeks to get items to level 3.   Remember, the “goal” is to build long-term memory for the set, not merely to race through levels.  Click the “About” tab in your Memory Bank to learn more.

What is the Memory Bank?

The Memory Bank is a visual representation of what you know, and how well you know it. Memory Bank visualizations show item-by-item level information (for a set) as well as information on all of your Cerego content in the  set-by-set level view. These are a great way to see what’s inside your head, and keep you motivated while you use Cerego.

What is Memory Permanence?

Memory Permanence is the measure of how permanent, or long-lasting, memories are - basically, how well you know the material. When items (or groups of items) have attained a high level of Memory Permanence, you can be reasonably certain that you will retain mastery of these topics far into the future.

How is my score calculated? Why does it sometimes go down?

Your score corresponds directly to your memory permanence. Correct answers indicate that you know the material better, and will increase your score. Likewise, incorrect answers mean that you need more review, and will decrease your score. If you stick to the study schedule, we promise that although you may have small drops from time to time, you will steadily get closer to the goal! It's important to remember that the progress percent score is not directly based on time or amount studied, so just make sure to stick to the study schedule, and to review on schedule before you forget!

Can I use Cerego on my mobile device? Will it still count?

You sure can! However, due to the way edX records grades, there is an important step required if you plan to use the mobile Cerego app to study and review. In order for your iOS study time to count towards the edX Certificate requirements, you will need to study each Cerego set through the edX website at least once after studying on your iPhone or iPad before the end of the course. Only when you log back into edX, and study the set there, will the work you've done with Cerego get sent back to the edX system. If you're not concerned with earning credit, however, you can use the mobile app without worrying about returning to your computer to study. Additionally, due to a limitation in the edX platform we are sometimes unable to link web and iOS accounts automatically. Please reach out to us at support@cerego.com if this is the case, and we will respond as soon as possible.

Why isn't cerego recording my progress?

If you are having issues with this, please email support@cerego.com for one-on-one help. Please note, if you are using the mobile app, you will need to study each Cerego set through the edX website at least once after studying on your iPhone or iPad before the end of the course to sync progress. Only when you log back into edX, and study the set there, will the work you've done with Cerego get sent back to the edX system.

Why isn't the audio working on Cerego? Why is it freezing or not loading? how can i get help?
