3. What is the difference between the Certificate issued by Wellesley College and the Verified Certificate of Completion issued by edX?

  • The Certificate issued by Wellesley College includes a letter grade and is available only to those student who enroll in our online live instruction classes. The grade shown on this Certificate reflects the work students have completed independently online as well as their level of preparation and participation in the online live instruction classes, and the grades they receive on written and oral assignments. Please note that our online live instruction classes are open to all learners, not only high school students preparing for the AP Italian exam. Therefore, the Certificate issued by Wellesley College may be used in the following ways:
      • High school students may present it to their high school for registration on their school transcript. Please note that this course has been officially approved by the College Board.
      • All learners may present it to any educational institution and/or employers as an important recognition of achievement and language proficiency.

The Certificate issued by Wellesley College is free but enrollment in our online live instruction classes requires the payment of a tuition. Click here to find out more.

4.  Can I enroll in more than one Italian course on edX? For example, can I enroll in AP Italian, Italian language and culture: Intermediate and Italian language and culture: Advanced  at the same time?

Yes, you may enroll in all three courses (AP Italian, Italian language and culture: Intermediate and Italian language and culture: Advanced) if you wish.

The Intermediate and Advanced courses focus on grammar structures, whereas AP's focus is on cultural themes. If you wish to review basic Italian grammar you may also enroll in Italian language and culture: Beginner.

5. How long will the course be accessible on the edX platform?

The course will be “live” until May 31st, 2018.  At that time, it will be archived but will still be accessible in its original form. However, scores on "Esercizi" entered after May 31st, 2018 will not be recorded.

6. What is the recommended time to complete the course?

Although the suggested time frame for completion is twelve weeks, the course can be done over any extended period of time (within May 31st, 2018) since it is entirely self-paced.
If you are enrolled in one of our
online live instruction classes you need to follow the syllabus for that class.

7. Can the course be repeated or re-taken?

Yes, the course is self-paced allowing complete flexibility to repeat any or all parts of each lesson.
However, if you are studying towards a Verified Certificate of Completion and if you are enrolled in one of our online live instruction classes the scores for exercises you have submitted the first time cannot be changed.

8. How can I determine whether I am ready to take AP Italian?

Generally speaking, if you have completed two or three years of Italian in high school, or two or three semesters at the university level, you should be ready for this course.

If you have learned Italian in an unconventional way, such as travel, family connections, etc., we can help you decide if this course meets your needs and goals. Please email us: apitalian@wellesley.edu

You may also try completing the first lesson. If you find that the lesson is challenging but doable, then you are in the right place.

9. Can I receive a Verified Certificate of Completion issued by edX and /or a Certificate issued by Wellesley College after the course is archived?

No, enrollees are eligible to receive any Certificates only during the period that the course is live on the edX platform (August 7th, 2017 - May 31st, 2018).

10. Can the course be operated on a tablet or smart phone?  Is it necessary to have use of a computer?

The course is accessible on any device that allows internet access but some type of activities such as "drag and drop" do not work on touch screen devices.

11. How can I get this "drag and drop" activity to work on my tablet?

We're afraid that the "drag and drop" exercises simply don't work on touchscreen devices, such as the iPad. This is an edX limitation. You will need to find a desktop or laptop computer to do any "drag and drop" exercises.

12. When I use my iPad, I cannot see the annotations embedded in the readings.

Unfortunately, annotations may not be visible on some touch-screen devices. Annotated words are also found in "Essential vocabulary" and "Difficult vocabulary" at the top of the page where each reading is located.

13. What browser should I use to access the course?

Although the course is accessible on all major browsers, we recommend that you use Chrome browser.
