Which time zone applies to my course?
All the times referred to in the course correspond to the UTC (Universal Time Coordinate) standard used across the world. You can see the current UTC time here, but you can use the World Clock to find out the difference between UTC and your local time. Please bear this in mind for delivery dates and times for the course exercises, as these will not be extended.
¿Qué zona horaria se utiliza en mi curso?
Todas las referencias horarias corresponden al estándar UTC (Tiempo Universal Coordinado) que se utiliza en todo el mundo. Puedes ver la hora actual UTC aquí, pero también puedes utilizar el Reloj Mundial para ver la diferencia entre UTC y tu hora local. Can I download the videos?
You are free to download whatever videos you wish except for the documentaries. The videos embedded in the platform are streamed from YouTube, but you can download them using the button below:
There are also versions in low resolution available for download.

Can I download the video transcripts?
You can download the video transcripts in .srt file or .txt file format clicking on the button below the embedded video:
The .srt file format is a transcription standard and is compatible with most video players, such as VLC. In players like this you can add the file to the video while you are playing it.
The transcripts are also available in .txt file format so that you can open them using whatever text processor you wish.
¿Puedo descargar los subtítulos de los vídeos?
Puedes descargar los subtítulos en formato .srt o. txt haciendo clic en el botón justo debajo del vídeo:
El formato .srt es un estándar de transcripción que es compatible con la mayoría de los reproductores, como por ejemplo VLC. Con reproductores de este tipo puedes añadir el fichero al video mientras lo reproduces.
Los subtítulos también están disponibles en formato .txt para que puedas abrirlos con cualquier procesador de texto.
What type of assessments can I expect to do in the course?
In this course you will find three types of assessments:
- Practice exercises: available after some videos of the course. These exercises are not graded so by completing them you will not be working towards the certificate.
- Evaluations: these are the graded tests at the end of the week content whose worth towards the certificate is detailed here and whose release calendar is outlined here. To pass the course and to get the certificate you need to achieve at least 60% of the total grade. It is not compulsory to do the all these evaluations to get the certificate.
- Peer assessment: this is a special graded activity in week 7 with a special calendar. Please check it here. In this activity you will need to write an essay about a topic and then submit it through the platform; your work will be evaluated by your fellows, as well as you will be evaluating other people's work. You need to choose to do it in English or in Spanish (but only in one of these languages). More information in week 7!
You can track your progress in the Progress tab. Your results in the evaluations will appear on the graph as well as recorded in the list of activities below; the practice exercises do not appear in the graph, but you can check in the list of activities below if you have successfully completed them or not. In the Progress graph and on the activities list you will find the Peer assessment, both for the English version and for the Spanish one, as a duplicated activity. The "x" means only one of these activities will be taken into account. As you only need to do it in one of the languages, do not worry if you see 0 points in the other one: this will be disregarded in your final grade.
¿Qué tipo de evaluaciones voy a encontrar?
En este curso encontrarás tres tipos de ejercicios de evaluación:
- Ejercicios de prácticas: disponibles después de cada vídeo. Estos ejercicios no se tienen en cuenta para la nota final del curso así que al hacerlos no estarás contribuyendo a la obtención del certificado.
- Evaluaciones: hay evaluaciones al final del contenido de cada semana cuya nota se tiene en cuenta para la obtención del certificado y cuyo valor se puede ver aquí y cuyo calendario está detallado aquí. Para aprobar el curso y conseguir el certificado hay que alcanzar un 60% del valor total del curso. No es obligatorio realizar todas las evaluaciones para conseguir el certificado.
- Evaluación por pares: se trata de una actividad especial en la semana 7 cuya calificación se tendrá en cuenta para el certificado y que tiene un calendario específico. Consúltalo aquí. Tendrás que escribir un texto sobre un tema y enviarlo a través de la plataforma; tu trabajo será evaluado por tus compañeros, así como tú tendrás también que evaluar el trabajo de otras personas. Tienes que elegir hacerla en español o en inglés (solo en uno de estos idiomas). ¡Más información en la semana 7!
Verás tu evolución en la información de la pestaña Progreso. Tus resultados en las evaluaciones aparecerán reflejados en el gráfico y en el listado de actividades que hay debajo; los ejercicios de prácticas no salen reflejados en el gráfico, pero sí podrás ver en el listado de actividades si los has hecho o no. Tanto en el gráfico de Progreso como en la relación de actividades verás la evaluación por pares, tanto en español como en inglés, como una actividad duplicada. La "x" significa que solo una de las actividades será tenida en cuenta. Como solo tienes que hacerla en uno de los dos idiomas, no te preocupes cuando veas 0 puntos en la del otro idioma: esto no se tendrá en cuenta en la calificación final.
How many times can I attempt an assessment?
Practice exercises and evaluations have a limited number of submissions. Please, pay attention to the information provided (depending on the assessment, there can be more or less attempts):
Please note:
- If you want to give an answer but you are not sure of it, you can click on save and decide later by clicking on check. Please bear in mind that the responses that are saved need to be checked before the due date of the exercises. Saving does not mean submitting.
- If you want to submit your answer, click on check. If you check, you will be using one submission. Be careful if there is only one submission available, as it will not be possible to reset the number of attempts.
¿Cuántas veces puedo intentar un ejercicio?
Los ejercicios de prácticas y las evaluaciones tienen un número limitado de intentos. Por favor, lee detenidamente la información al respecto (dependiendo del tipo de ejercicio puede haber más o menos intentos):
Por favor, ten en cuenta que:
- A la hora de responder, si no estás seguro del todo, puedes seleccionar guardar y enviar la respuesta más tarde marcando revisar. Ten presente que para enviar una respuesta, que previamente hayas guardado, tienes que seleccionar revisar antes de la fecha definitiva de entrega del ejercicio. Guardar no significa que hayas enviado tu respuesta.
- Si quieres enviar tu respuesta, selecciona revisar. Al hacerlo estarás utilizando un intento. Ten cuidado si sólo se ofrece un intento, ya que no se puede modificar el número de intentos.
How can I get a course certificate?
If you get 60% (or higher) of the total grade, you will pass the course and you will be able to get a certificate from the user Dashboard (an Honor Code Certificate or a Verified Certificate, depending on the choice you made when you enrolled in the course).
If you are already enrolled in the Honor Code track and you want to upgrade to the Verified Track, you can do so from your Dashboard (please bear in mind that you must apply for it before 1 September, 00:00 UTC)
¿Cómo puedo conseguir el certificado del curso?
Si tu nota final corresponde al 60% (o más) de la nota total del curso habrás aprobado y podrás conseguir un certificado del ‘Dashboard’ (panel de control) de usuario (un certificado de Código de Honor o un certificado Verificado, dependiendo de la opción que elegiste al inscribirte en el curso).
Si ya has elegido la opción de Código de Honor pero quieres cambiar a la opción de certificado Verificado puedes hacerlo desde tu ‘Dashboard’ (por favor, recuerda que hay que hacerlo antes del 1 de septiembre 00:00 UTC):

How can I check my progress on the course?
You can check your progress by clicking on the Progress tab. There you will see a graph that depicts your score for each exam and your total score. Below this you will see a breakdown of your weekly progress both for the exams and practice exercises.
¿Cómo puedo seguir mi progreso en el curso?
Puedes seguir tu progreso haciendo clic en la pestaña de Progreso. Allí verás un gráfico que demuestra tu nota para cada examen y la nota total. Debajo encontrarás un desglose de tus progresos semanales tanto para los exámenes como para los ejercicios de prácticas.
When will I hear from the instructors?
At the start of the course and every week from then onwards, the instructors will send you an email with important information you need to know for the next module. The instructors will also publish messages on the edx platform. You will see these messages when you access your course. If you need to refer to these messages when you are working on your course go to the Course Info tab.
¿Cuándo se comunicarán los profesores conmigo?
Al comienzo del curso y cada semana posterior los profesores te enviarán un email con información importante que necesitarás para el siguiente módulo. Los profesores también publicarán mensajes en la plataforma edX. Encontrarás los mensajes cuando accedes al curso. Si necesitas consultar estos mensajes mientras estés trabajando en el curso pincha en la pestaña de Información del curso.
Can I communicate with the instructors in the course forum?
The aim of the course forum is to encourage participation and communication among learners. Please review our discussion guidelines.
The instructors will monitor the forum but please do not expect them to answer all your questions. This is impossible due to the large number of people taking part in the course.
¿Puedo comunicarme con los profesores a través del foro del curso?
El objetivo del foro es fomentar la participación y comunicación entre los estudiantes. Puedes revisar los directrices del foro aquí.
Los profesores seguirán el foro pero por favor no esperes que contesten a todas tus preguntas. Esto sería imposible dado el gran número de personas que están realizando el curso.
After the course ends on 21 de Septiembre, will it still be available?
After 21 September, the contents of the course and the self-evaluation activities will still be available, as the course will be accessible as an "archived" course.
