COURSE ASSESSMENTS

This course contains chapter comprehension questions, a three-part "Reflection Journey" exercise, and a final exam.

VERIFIED LEARNERS: The final exam counts for 100% of your final grade. It consists of information from all of the lectures. You must pass with a 70% or above to receive your Verified Certificate.

Whether or not you are pursuing a certificate, you are encouraged to complete all of the assessments, as they are your opportunity to gauge how well you understand the material and reflect on what you have learned from the course. Each video chapter will have a series of corresponding comprehension questions. You will have two attempts at each question if it has multiple answers, and only one attempt if the question has only two answers or is true/false.

Reflection Journey

During the course, you will encounter three writing exercises that prompt you to reflect on your own understanding of virtue ethics and moral responsibility. The three reflections come at critical points in the course, and are designed to build on each other.

Reflection Journey - Part I: The first reflection is foundational. It is an opportunity for you to take stock of your thoughts going into the course, before you have watched any lecture videos.

Reflection Journey - Part II: The second reflection comes after Module 4, concluding our exploration of the virtue ethics traditions and their lessons for society as a whole. In this part of the Journey, you'll revisit what you wrote for Part I and consider if/how your thoughts may have changed after completing Modules 1-4.

Reflection Journey - Part III: The third reflection comes at the end of the course, after the exploration of religion, ethics, and their implications for different thematic areas of sustainable development. In this final segment of the journey, you will once again revisit and revise your reflection from Part II, consider how your thoughts have changed as a result of what you learned from Modules 5 through 10, and then summarize your reflection journey overall.

You are encouraged to share your reflection journey with fellow learners by posting your responses to the prompts on the Discussion Boards provided. Or you can use the prompts to inspire reflection offline, if you would prefer not to post publicly. You also have the option of posting on the Discussion Boards anonymously.

We hope that the Reflection Journey exercise helps you consider more deeply your own understanding of virtue ethics and the role that ethical action can play in serving the common good.

In order for everyone to get the most out of their learning experience, please ensure that course discussions are respectful and adhere to the edX Rules for Online Conduct

Final Exam

As mentioned above, the final exam will combine information from all the lectures and readings. For the final exam, please remember:

  • You will be allowed only two attempts to select the correct answers for multiple choice and “check all that apply” questions.
  • You will be allowed only one attempt at the correct answer for True/False questions or multiple choice questions with just two answers.

NOTE: The final exam will combine information from all the lectures and readings and will be released during the last week of the course. You will see two versions of the final exam in your Course Outline: one for learners on the Verified Track, and one for learners on the Audit Track. The questions are exactly the same for both tracks--but the Verified Track exam is graded for learners pursuing a Verified Certificate.
