How should I allocate my time to study for the course?

This is a instructor-led course starting November 1 2016 and closing December 16 2016. Those opting for a verified certificate need to finish all learning activities and assignments by the closing date. You have until November 30 to upgrade to a verified certificate.

Can I contact the instructor or teaching assistants?

Not directly. We kindly refer you to the discussion forums for all questions. The teaching assistants will be monitoring these weekly forums on a regular basis.  However, once new content is released for the next week staff will no longer moderate the previous week’s discussion forums. Post your questions in the appropriate forums.

Will a certificate be awarded?

Yes, if you gain a 70% pass mark and you have opted for a verified certificate, you will be able to download your certificate via a link from your dashboard when you achieve this pass mark. This certificate indicates that you have successfully completed the course but does not include a specific grade.

How do I pass this course?

This course requires that you achieve a pass mark of at least 70% of the course assessment activities and assignments.

How do the grades work?

Learning activities:
In each section you will be asked to answer questions relating to the contents of the video lectures and supplementary material in the form of open access scientific articles or book chapters. We will drop the two learning activities with the lowest scores. These learning activities contribute to 70% of your final grade. In some cases the learning activities involve your posting comments in discussion forums. Please note that the forums will not be moderated by staff so please help your fellow students who post questions.

Course assignments:
You will be given 3 assignments in the first five sections of the course. These assignments vary in nature depending on the theme of the section. These assignments contribute to 30% of your final grade.

Final course assignment:

In the final assignment of the course you will be asked to create your own story of a process of behavior change. You will be asked to self-grade your story of change against our grading rubric. You will also be asked to share your story (and the grade you gave yourself) with fellow students in the appropriate forum. This final assignment will contribute to 10% of your final grade.

When are assignments due?

There are no official due dates for assignments. At the time the course closes (December 16), you will no longer be able to post to the discussion forums or submit assignments.  The course material however will remain open for you to access.

I started the course late, can I get an extension on assignments and tests?

Unfortunately, due to the volume of participants in the course we cannot make considerations on a case by case basis. However, even if you started late you may be able to catch up on course contents. All assignments have to be submitted by December 16.

When do I get my grade?

Your grades will be calculated and displayed in the progress bar instantaneously. If you achieved 70% or greater as your final course grade, you will receive your certificate of completion after the course ends.

Why are there "x"s on my progress grade for the assessments?

These “x’s” represent that you can “drop” two learning activities as part of your final course grade.

What do I use the free text boxes for?

In some learning activities you are provided with "free text" boxes to submit your answers or reflections on a particular topic. Your answers are automatically checked as correct. These text areas allow you to save your answers and return to them should you wish to. Reflecting on and recording your answers in these exercises will improve learning outcomes and retention of knowledge. They also contribute to your overall grade for the course since you are awarded credit for these activities. Please remember that as a student on an edX course you have agreed to observe the edX Terms of service code .

When does the course end?

The course officially ends on December 16, 2016 at 09:00 (UTC). The discussion forums will also close for new posts on December 16. You will still be able to access the course materials after that date but no longer be able to submit assignments.

USING EDX

What kind of certificate is there for this course?

You can choose to either audit this course (no certifcate but free access to all course material) or to pay for the verified certificate.

Verified certificates

To obtain a verified certificate, you need to achieve a final completion rate of 70% or more. EdX will issue the certificate under the name of KIX and you will be able to download it via your dashboard when you have completed the course and obtained the required pass mark. The certificate will indicate only that you have passed the course; i.e., no specific final grade will be shown. As described above, your observance of the edX Terms of service code is key to your honestly earned certificate. Learn more about the Verified certificates here.

USING THE FORUM

How do I use the Discussion Forums?

The discussion forums are open to everyone in the course and follow the course (organized by section and activities for that section).

So, in a specific section, there are places for you and your classmates to discuss the assignments, activities and readings for that week. As well, there is a discussion forum for each week “Comments and Questions” where you can post general questions and comments on the contents and themes in that section of the course.

For more information on how the discussion forums work, please refer to the Course Welcome section under the heading Understanding the edX platform where you will find video tutorials showing how the edX platform works.
