Michael Shinn

Michael Shinn’s diverse career in music reflects his deep passion for performance, education, and entrepreneurship in the arts. He is Chair of Keyboard Studies at The Juilliard School, where he teaches piano, chamber music, piano pedagogy, keyboard skills, and analysis for performers. Dr. Shinn is also on the piano faculty of Juilliard’s Evening Division and serves as Senior Advisor for Educational and Artistic Programs at Juilliard Global Ventures. Together with his wife, Dr. Jessica Shinn, he co-founded and co-directs the pianoSonoma Music Festival.

Susan Batchelor Yue Fang Jose Giraldo
Susan Batchelor has been a participant in the Juilliard Evening Division for several years, enjoying courses in piano, theory, and general music studies. Her career has predominantly been working as a Controller/CFO in the financial services industry, and she has enjoyed living and working in Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, London, and now New York. Yue Fang, from Quzhou, China, followed her passions – people, the arts, and many others – to New York, where she has lived since 2012. She didn’t study the piano as a child, but since joining Juilliard Global Ventures has been happily immersing herself in music studies. Jose Giraldo studies piano at Juilliard’s Evening Division with Dr. Michael Shinn, in addition to classes in music theory and keyboard studies. A native New Yorker, Jose is currently an assistant teaching artist in the New York City school system, and will be attending college in Cincinnati in 2017 to get his degree in music education/piano pedagogy.

Jeremy Jordan Tristan Teo Angie Zhang
Pianist Jeremy Jordan completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Juilliard. He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at notable venues in the United States and Europe. Pianist Tristan Teo is an active soloist throughout the US and Europe. A student in the accelerated BM/MM program at Juilliard, he serves as a teaching fellow for secondary piano. American pianist Angie Zhang is pursuing her studies in the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange Program. At Juilliard, she serves as the chair of the Student Council and serves as a teaching fellow for the keyboard studies department.

Spenser Theberge Riley Flynn Dominik Belavy
Juilliard alumnus Spenser Theberge is a freelance dancer, choreographer, and highly sought-after teacher of contemporary technique and improvisation. Spenser is the choreographer for the dance piece featured in this course. American dancer Riley O’Flynn is currently a student in Juilliard Dance Division, where he is also an active member of outreach projects in New Orleans, California, and El Salvador. American baritone Dominik Belavy is an undergraduate student at Juilliard and has appeared in recitals in New York, London, Dublin, and Leipzig. Dominik performs a Mozart aria during the interview in Module 2.

Thomas Cabaniss Nicolas Namoradze Rachel Straus
Versatile composer Thomas Cabaniss serves the music theory faculty at Juilliard and as a teaching artist for the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall. Tom discusses dynamics in this course. Juilliard alum pianist and composer Nicolas Namoradze is an active soloist who has appeared on stages throughout the US and Europe. In this course, he discusses the evolution of the sustain pedal. Dance scholar Rachel Straus is a full-time faculty member at Juilliard and the dance critic at Musical America. In this course, Rachel discusses rhythm as it relates to both dance and piano performance.

Brian Zeger
Brian Zeger is one of today’s leading collaborative pianists and serves as the Artistic Director of Juilliard’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Vocal Arts Department. Brian discusses how the Italian language influences articulation and phrasing in piano works of the Classical period.

Course Production


Yue Fang Walker Higgins Leah Siepel
Yue Fang is the Course Builder and China Communications Specialist for Juilliard Global Ventures. She collaborated closely with subject matter experts and the course production team to produce Music Theory 101, Sharpen Your Piano Artistry, Conquering Performance Anxiety, Piano Preludes: Bach, Chopin and Debussy, and Discovering Instruments of the Orchestra. Walker Higgins is the Media Production Associate for Juilliard Global Ventures and the Creative Director of Music Theory 101. He studied film at SUNY Purchase and has worked at Juilliard since graduating. A native of Manhattan, whose parents have worked at The Met and MoMA, he’s passionate about making the arts accessible to everyone. Leah Siepel is the Director of Instructional Design for Juilliard Global Ventures. She collaborated closely with Michael Shinn and the course production team to envision and design Music Theory 101, Sharpen Your Piano Artistry, and How to Listen to Great Orchestral Music.
David Townsend Jude Vaclavik
David Townsend is a multimedia producer by day and an actor by night. David has been working in museums and educational non-profits for over ten years. As an actor he has appeared on Broadway, in many regional theaters, and on television shows such as Boardwalk Empire, The Knick, Daredevil, The Americans, and more. Jude Vaclavik is the Artistic Producer for Digital Content for Juilliard Global Ventures and the Lead Writer for Music Theory 101.
