Dr. L. Michael Griffel

L. Michael Griffel is chairperson of the music history department at The Juilliard School, where he has taught since 1997. Professor emeritus of music at Hunter College and The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, he also taught for many years at The Mannes College of Music. Educated at Yale, Juilliard, and Columbia, with degrees in music theory, piano performance, and historical musicology, respectively, Griffel specializes in nineteenth-century music history. His piano studies at Juilliard were with Rosina Lhevinne and Martin Canin. Among his publications are chapters in The Cambridge Companion to Schubert, The Schirmer History of Music, and Scholars Who Teach, and contributions to journals such as The Musical Quarterly, MLA Notes, The Beethoven Journal, Current Musicology, and the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism. From 1995 to 1997, Griffel served as vice-president of the New York Chapter of the American Beethoven Society.

Dr. Lisa B. Robinson

Lisa B. Robinson holds a PhD in music theory from Yale University and a BM in music theory and composition from the University of Maryland. An employee of The Juilliard School since 2000, she is Manager of Educational Content for Juilliard Global Ventures. She was principal writer of the apps Juilliard String Quartet: An Exploration of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" and Juilliard Open Studios, as well as the author and editor of A Living Legacy: Historic Stringed Instruments at The Juilliard School (Amadeus Press, 2006). Dr. Robinson has taught courses in music theory at Yale, the University of North Carolina, and Juilliard. She was a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Women Composers and has written program notes for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, American String Quartet, and other ensembles.

Dr. Ashley Jackson – Course Fellow

Praised for her rhythmic precision and dynamic range, harpist Dr. Ashley Jackson enjoys a multifaceted career in New York and beyond. She holds degrees from Juilliard (DMA) and Yale University (BA, MM). As an orchestral harpist, she performs with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolis Ensemble, and Novus NY. Past speaking engagements include "Representation as Resistance: How an Activist Orchestra Redresses the Push-out of Black Practitioners from Classical Music" (Harvard) and "The Cultural Citizen: How Classical Music Got Me Woke" (SUNY Purchase). She is currently an Adjunct Artist at Vassar College and serves as the Deputy Director of The Dream Unfinished.

Theo Chandler – Course Assistant

Theo Chandler is a composer and clarinetist, currently pursuing his Master of Music degree in Composition at Juilliard. His orchestral and chamber works have been performed internationally. In his work, he focuses on the experience of the performers and the perceived hierarchy in an ensemble as the primary means of expression.
