Guide to sharing a video on edX

At certain points throughout this course, you will have the option to respond to assessment activities with a video that you create. Creating and sharing a video in edX involves the following options and steps:

    1. Create a video on your device (i.e. smart phone, tablet, laptop, digital camera, etc.)
    2. Upload your video to a video sharing platform (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo, Youku, Google Drive, OneDrive)  OR use a video recording platform such as Zoom
    3. Post your video link in this edX course.

OR Alternatively if you have access to a cloud based recording process such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams you can record and create a public link of the recording.

NOTE: If you are having problems with this process due to an issue with your physical location and are unable to meet the requirements of the submission, please indicate this in your submission and submit in an alternative form while attempting to meet the rubric requirements of the submission.

Each of these steps is described further below.

Step 1: Create a video on your device

You can create a video using a smart phone, tablet, laptop (with webcam), digital camera, and other devices. Instructions for creating a video depend on the make and model of the device that you own, but is usually relatively straightforward. For example, most smart phones have a camera app that includes a video recording option. Simply set the camera position, press the record button, and start your video. Press the stop button when finished and your video will be available. Refer to the instruction manual for your device to learn how to create your video.

Step 2: Upload your video to a video sharing platform OR Use a video creation cloud system such as Zoom

Once you have created your video, the next step is to upload it to a video sharing platform. Once uploaded, you will need to make sure it is set to be publicly viewable (i.e. not private), and obtain a public URL for the video.

TIP: Before posting your link in edX, share it with a friend to ensure that it is publicly viewable.

Alternative option (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams with cloud based recording and Public Link)

For the this to work you have to be able to record to the cloud.

  • Start the meeting and when you are ready press the record button.
  • When you are finished stop the recording.
  • Depending on the software you should receive some indication that the recording is ready and a link to the public recording to share in edX.
  • Once you have the public link see Step 3 above.
