Peer Evaluations
Peer evaluations of writing submissions are completed in two different ways throughout the course. Ten percent of your graded is comprised of writing submissions through the discussion forums provided. Each Section has at least one discussion writing assignment. These writings are considered "drafts" and offer much needed practice and interaction between you and your peers. Thirty percent of your writing submissions will be graded by using the Peer Assessment tool. These assignments will appear in Sections 4, 5 and 8.
10% - Reviews of Drafts in Discussions (scroll down to Read about Graded Assessments)
The review of drafts posted in the discussion forums will be done by following a rubric. A rubric is a list of specific characteristics by which you will evaluate peer work. When reviewing, you will examine the writing submission for these characteristics and then assign the appropriate score and some written feedback.
To engage in these exchanges, choose three or four of your peer's submissions from a given assignment. These submissions are posted as a Response to the corresponding discussion forum. Peer reviews of each Response will be posted in the form of a Comment.
First, post your DRAFT as a response to the discussion forum:
Next, Add a Comment to your peers response post:
Feedback
The feedback is returned in TWO PARTS: Rating and Written feedback.
The Rating Scale
NOTE: In the top of the Response field, enter a number corresponding with the following rating scale like this: Rating: 5
- The summary is incomprehensible.
- The summary is not very good.
- The summary is adequate.
- The summary is very good.
- The summary is superb.
Written Feedback
Provide written feedback in your response by answering the following questions:
- Did they provide enough information for you to understand the text?
- Would you have had to read the text beforehand to understand what they were talking about?
- Did they provide too much information?
- What was their style and tone like?
Analyzing the works of others helps us to learn how to analyze our own work, so be sure to focus on giving feedback that will help your peers become better writers. You will be helping yourself become a better writer, too.
30% - Graded Assessment Using the Peer Evaluation Tool
There are three writing submissions in this course that account for 30% of your grade. These assignments will graded by your peers using the edX Peer Assessment tool. Graded writing submissions will appear in the following Sections:
- Section 4
- Section 5
- Section 8
It is expected that by practicing both writing and reviewing in Sections 1-3 that you and your peers will have gained the skills needed to perform a graded exercise. We will announce the procedure for grading using the Peer Assessment tool on the course homepage and through e-mail. You should see this information for grading before Section 4 opens, so please check back here later.
