TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

GETTING STARTED

1. I downloaded the Training Packet, but I don’t see CLASlite. Where can I find the software?

The Training Packet includes the imagery you will need for the course as well as documentation on the software, but it does not include the software itself. To download the software, you will need to register at CLASlite.org. You will have the option to try CLASlite free for 30 days.

2. My CLASlite download is freezing.

If possible, please re-attempt your download a few different times, as the host server may be choked up. If your internet connection is very slow, you may need to download the three files from a location with a high-speed connection, copy them to a thumb drive, and then run the executable on your regular machine.

3.  Do I need to install IDL to run CLASlite?

No. Whether or not you have IDL installed on your machine, a 32-bit IDL virtual machine will be installed during the CLASlite installation.

4. Where do I find ENVI Freelook?

Once you download CLASlite, you can find the ENVI Freelook installer in your CLASlite folder (e.g. C:\claslite\envi freelook).

5. I don’t see a logfile in my CLASlite folder.

Your logfile should be in your main CLASlite directory (see below, look for your ‘machine’s host name_logfile’). If you don’t see it there, it’s possible that something went wrong during your installation, possibly because an anti-virus program was running. Please go to C:\claslite\temp\installation_files and check if there is a file called ‘license.exe’. If so, please run it (after disabling any anti-virus software).

If not, other solutions that have worked are:

(1) Uninstalling CLASlite using the ‘unins000.exe’ file in the main folder, deleting the CLASlite31_temp folder, and re-downloading by following the instructions in the installation manual.

(2) Running any critical Windows updates, particularly the .NET Framework 4 and Visual C++ packages, and then re-starting your machine and re-running the ‘license.exe’ file.

CLASLITE LICENSING ISSUES

1. My free license has expired and I have not finished the course yet.

The free license is only available once for 30 days, please make sure you complete the course within this period.

2. When I try to open CLASlite, I encounter an error that says ‘License Invalid’

First, have you uploaded your logfile following the instructions in the "CLASlite_v3.3_InstallationManual_2019". You can download the manual with your CLASlite software at CLASlite.org

Brief Outline of Instructions:

- Locate the logfile, a file with the name, “COMPUTERNAME_logfile

- Can’t find your logfile? See “FAQ – Getting Started” #5

- Log into your account on https://claslite.org

- Under “My Profile” click on “Generate License”

- You will see a button for “Logfile Upload”

- Click on “Choose File” and upload Logfile

After you have uploaded your logfile to this site, you will receive an email containing a license key (‘claslite_key.txt’) for your computer.  You should download this file and place it in your CLASlite directory.  If you have any issues, please contact info@i-cultiver.com

ISSUES WHEN RUNNING CLASLITE

1. When I try to open CLASlite, I encounter an error that says: “This application has failed to start because MSVCR100.dll was not found…”

Please try installing the .NET Framework 4 and Visual C++ packages, re-starting your machine, and attempting to open CLASlite again.

2. Can I modify the spectral libraries used in the AutoMCU step of Step 2: Map Fractional Cover to include my own spectra?

No, the spectral libraries cannot be modified as they are embedded within the CLASlite code.

3. When running CLASlite, I encounter an error that says ‘Unable to allocated memory to make array’.

This is a RAM-related error. Please check how much RAM your machine has. Most images should run fine on a machine with 2 GB RAM. Landsat 8 images are a little more memory-intensive and may require 2.5 GB RAM. If you have less RAM than this, you will likely need to use another machine. Another potential solution is to close all other programs while running CLASlite.

4. When running CLASlite, I encounter an error that says ‘CATCHERROR ? Illegal subscript range: SLICE’

The cause of this error that we have seen in the past is that the thermal file(s) are corrupted during the image download or unzipping process. If you encounter this error even after repeated downloads of the imagery, you should find another source from which to obtain the images. We encourage you to use the (free) USGS Earth Explorer database (earthexplorer.usgs.gov) for Landsat imagery.

5. When running CLASlite, I encounter an error that says ‘CATCHERROR ? OPENW: Error opening file. Unit: 100’

Assuming you are the administrator and/or have write access to your machine, this is most likely an issue with your directory path. You may see this error if the path is very long, or includes spaces or some characters such as ‘+’s or some foreign letters. Please change your path to a ‘higher up’ location (that is, not buried too deep in sub-folders) and change the name to a short, simple name with only Latin alphabet letters.

If you are not an administrator of your machine, please double check that you have write access to the directory to which you are saving your outputs.

6. CLASlite is eating up my hard drive space.

CLASlite should not consume more than 28 GB of hard drive space at any given time. Steps 1, 2, and 3 require less than this. Note: If you attempt to run CLASlite on a mosaic of two images, more hard space will be required and, for mosaics larger than two images, CLASlite’s memory limitation will most likely be exceeded and no output image will be generated.

However, if you have encountered errors previously when running CLASlite, you may have an accumulation of unwanted, unnecessary files in the C:\claslite\temp folder. If you see anything in that folder besides the ‘installation_files’ sub-folder, please delete. That should free up hard drive space. Raw imagery and CLASlite outputs are also large files, so you may need to move imagery that you are no longer processing to an external hard drive if you are running low on space.

7. When running CLASlite, I encounter an error that says ‘CATCHERROR ? Error encountered writing to file: Unit 101…”

Assuming you are the administrator and/or have write access to your machine, this is likely an issue of limited hard drive space. Please see “FAQ – Issues when running CLASlite” #6.

If you are not an administrator of your machine, please double check that you have write access to the directory to which you are saving your outputs.

8. When I try to save CLASlite outputs as geotiff files, I encounter an error that says ‘CATCHERROR ? Unable to expand wildcards in file path, or file does not exist...’.

The cause of this error that we have seen in the past is that a file called ‘MSVCP71.dll’ is missing from your Windows OS.

The first thing we would recommend is installing the Visual C++ package, restarting your machine, and then re-attempting to run CLASlite and save your output as a geotiff.

If that doesn’t help, we would recommend following the tips on these websites:

http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/fix-msvcp71-dll-and-msvcr71-dll-missing-error-in-windows-7/ (specific to Windows 7) or

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/msvcp71-dll-not-found-missing-error.htm (more general), then re-running CLASlite.

If that doesn’t help, please go to Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update and download any ‘important updates’ that are available.

If none of the above helps, please let us know.

9. I want to use the batch processing tool, but it takes too long to prepare the .csv template for steps 1 and 2.

One user has written a script that compiles a code to automatically extract the date, time, and gains parameters for your images. For more information, see this post on the discussion forum.

WRAPPING UP COURSE

After you complete your course, you can contact us (info@i-cultiver.com) with any questions regarding the license. After your 30 day free trial expires, you will have the choice to get a one year license. Please visit CLASlite.org for more details.

11. I successfully completed the course. May I install CLASlite on a colleague’s machine for his or her use?

No, each individual who wishes to use CLASlite should obtain the license, and they have the option to take the training course and a 30 day free trial license. Please direct any colleagues with questions regarding CLASlite either to the website CLASlite.org or they can send an email (info@i-cultiver.com) with inquiries.
