About the Course

Monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems are essential to understanding whether national adaptation plan (NAP) processes work, how they work, and for whom, while offering insights to improve climate change adaptation actions.

This course was developed by the NAP Global Network, whose secretariat is hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development. It is offered through the SDG Academy. 

The course will equip climate change adaptation professionals with key methodologies, tools, and practical skills for implementing effective MEL systems for NAP processes. It will also combine expert instruction, engaging materials, and real-world examples to provide a meaningful learning experience. 

This course is ideal for

  • government officials (NAP teams) and policy-makers
  • climate change adaptation practitioners and professionals
  • MEL specialists for climate change adaptation (both governmental and non-governmental)
    academics and researchers

By the end of this course, learners will have

  • strengthened their skills and knowledge for designing and implementing effective MEL systems for NAP processes;
  • identified key concepts, methodologies, and tools related to MEL systems for NAP processes;
  • an increased awareness of the crucial role of MEL in supporting NAP processes.


Course Logistics & Requirements

This course is self-paced, which means that you can access all of the content as soon as the course begins on April 1, 2025. You have until August 31, 2026, to complete all of the materials.

The course includes 6 modules comprising video lectures, case studies, handouts, quizzes, and discussion activities. It is important that we get to know more about you, your level of knowledge and expectations, which is why we have prepared pre- and post-course surveys.

The estimated time commitment to complete all course components is this course should take on average 1-2 hours per module over the course of 4-6 weeks, though this depends heavily on the learner and their objectives in taking the course.

This course contains lecture videos, case study videos, quizzes, handouts, discussion activities, and pre- and post-course surveys.

Upon completion of all modules, you have the opportunity to receive a Certificate of Completion. See the “Assessments & Certificates” tab at the top of your screen to learn more.

While this course is not credit-granting, we encourage learners to work with their own institutions to explore the option of granting credit for online coursework.
