Please use the instructions below to help navigate the course in your preferred language. These instructions include guidance on (1) course videos, (2) coursework, and (3) other tips and contact information.
1. Course Videos
The course videos have been recorded in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Video subtitles are available in all three languages for each video. Accompanying translation materials are available in the other languages not used in the video.
For example, Carlos Nobre is the instructor for video 1.1 and speaks in Portuguese. Video 1.1 has subtitles available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, as well as accompanying translated materials available in English and Spanish.
1.1 What are the accompanying translation materials provided with each video?
The text, figures, and images already included in the videos are provided in the language spoken by the instructor.
Accompanying translation materials provide students with the translated text, figures, and images in the other two languages.
Students who do not speak/read the language spoken by the instructor should turn on the video subtitles and use the accompanying translation materials to access the content in the language of their choice.
1.2 How do I know which language the video, subtitles, and accompanying translation materials are provided in?
Each video in the course is accompanied by a short summary of the video, information about the language and translations, and the accompanying translation materials.
At the top of each video, students will see information indicating the language being spoken in the video and the languages of the accompanying translated materials:
- The “lecture source language” indicates the language of the audio of the video, as well as the language of the figures/images shown directly in the video.
-
The “available subtitles & translations” indicate the other languages in which video subtitles and translated materials have been made available to students.
1.3 How do I activate the video subtitles?
- Subtitles: Click “cc” in the lower right corner of the video to turn on the video subtitles in your language of choice. Note that the subtitles will appear in yellow text. These subtitles can be moved higher or lower in the video window by clicking and dragging the subtitle box as needed.
- Full video transcripts: Click the quotation marks in the lower right corner to view the full video transcript next to your video in your language of choice.
1.4 How do I access the accompanying translated materials?
Each video is accompanied by PDFs that contain the translations of all of the text, figures, and images that appear in the video.
These materials are only available in the two languages not spoken in the original video. This is because the original video already contains these materials in the lecture source language.
The accompanying translated materials can be accessed by clicking the translation buttons that appear at the top of each video page.
2. Coursework
All of the coursework (pre- and post-course surveys, video comprehension questions, readings, discussion activities, assignments, and final exam) is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Translations of all of the coursework are easily accessible at the buttons at the top of each course page.
For the comprehension questions and assignments, students can use the translations (available at the buttons at the top of each course page) as a guide to understand what is being asked of them. However, all responses must ultimately be submitted on the course platform itself in order to be completed.
For the assignments, students will explore external videos and interactive databases. Students will see specific notes about the languages in which these assignment materials are available as they navigate through the course.
For the discussion activities, students are encouraged to write in the language of their choice to interact with other learners in the Discussion Boards.
