Syllabus

ORGANIZATION

This course is organized into 8 different topics.

COURSE MATERIAL

The course material consists of readings (which are mostly case studies), lecture videos, and different types of assignments. For a complete overview, please see the Course Schedule.

In most modules we will ask you to read one case study before you watch the lecture videos. We want you to imagine what you would do before we introduce concepts and theories. The case study helps you understand the problem at the center of the course discussion and build the intuition we will develop in the videos. You may also bring fresh ideas and share them with others! The overview of the topic will help you know how to approach the course material for that module.

COURSE TEAM

Because this is a self-paced course, the course team will not check the discussion forum daily. Please use the Contact page if you need to get in touch with us.

ASSIGNMENTS

There are three (3) types of assignments in this course.

    1. Quizzes will ask you to apply concepts from the videos to the analysis of a second case study. You will therefore need to read the second case study before you try to take the quiz. The purpose is to give you practice and to help you build your knowledge. You may take the quizzes as many times as you need to get the answers correct.
    2. Gallery Assignments will give you an opportunity to present your ideas and insights to the other participants in the course, and in turn, learn from them. Click to learn more about the Assignment Gallery. In addition to the Appalachian Mountain assignment, there are seven (7) gallery assignments; and you should complete at least five (5) of seven (7).
    3. Practicums introduce a practical skill associated with the topic discussed in a given module. There are four (4) practicums in this course, and you should complete one (1).
The practicum consists of a lecture (broken into video segments), written materials, and a quiz. The topics are:
      • Streamlining a Process
      • Project Management Basics
      • Communications,
      • Strategy Development
