AnatomyX: Musculoskeletal Cases

Instructor: Dr. Trudy Van Houten

Course Overview

AnatomyX: Musculoskeletal Cases is a learning experience focused on the fundamentals of musculoskeletal anatomy. The course aims to help learners achieve: 1) an understanding of the anatomy basic to five commonly occurring musculoskeletal injuries, 2) recognition of the fundamental relationship between anatomical structure and function, 3) an ability to integrate and correlate data from multiple sources, including gross anatomy, histology, radiology, and clinical/surgical considerations, and 4) an appreciation of the principle that sound anatomical knowledge is one of the fundamental underpinnings for sound clinical decision-making.

During this course, you will experience a range of ways in which clinicians see the human body and use anatomical data to inform treatment.  Each of the cases begins with a clinical encounter between a "patient" and an orthopedic surgeon.  We will review basic facts regarding the case and inspect radiographic images.  In order to more fully understand the nature of these injuries, and the factors that go into operative repair, we will invite you into the Harvard Medical School's Gross Anatomy Lab, where Dr. Trudy Van Houten and Dr. Alexander Bick perform a dissection of the relevant structures on a human cadaver donated for medical education.  The cases culminate in surgical footage of the appropriate surgical repair.

Along the way, you will have the opportunity to test your understanding of the material and participate in adaptive learning sessions designed to increase retention after the course has ended.

Grading

After it is released, all content will be open until the end of the course. This date will be listed on the course landing page.  If you are on the ID Verified track and reach a 60% grade on all sections marked as homework, you will receive a certificate of completion for the course. The certificate is only available on the ID Verified track.

Review Your Knowledge Sessions

Throughout the course, you will encounter a number of vocabulary review sessions. These sessions are ungraded and theoretically optional.  However, we think they will provide a way of reviewing your understanding of anatomical facts and concepts.
