Assessment and grading

All assessed activities in the MicroMasters courses, including the final project, have a pass mark of 50 (C). You can view the University of Edinburgh’s Extended Common Marking Scheme for more information. This course is graded on a pass/fail grading scheme. To qualify for a certificate for this course, you must complete all assessed activities on the verified track and receive a grade of 50 or higher.

Becoming a verified learner gives you access to graded assessments and the opportunity to earn an official verified certificate for your learning. Certificates are issued by edX under the name of EdinburghX. You will be notified on your edX dashboard when your certificate is available, which is within two weeks of the course end date.

This course has a total of 6 assessments. Please note, any coding activities in the course that are not included in the summative grading will serve as formative assessment and you will receive feedback on your work within the coding environment to enhance your programming skills. Your overall grade for the course is calculated using the following weightings:

Course delivery and key dates

You have access to all course content from the course start date, 14 January 2020, 00:00 GMT. The course will be taught on a week by week basis. You are permitted to move through the course at your own pace, however, the course instructors will only be teaching within the relevant week of this course run.

It is expected that you will spend approximately 8 to 10 hours per week studying and completing activities.

Here are some key dates for your diary:

  • Deadline to upgrade to the verified track: 29 February 2020, 23:59 GMT. Please note, only verified learners are able to access graded assessments and earn a certificate of completion.
  • All graded assessments are due by 9 March 2020, 23:59 GMT
  • The course will end on 9 March 2020, 23:59 GMT. Please note, verified learners will have unlimited access to course content after the course end date.
