Lecturers and staff

This page introduces all lecturers and staff involved in 'Forensic Engineering'.

Arjo Loeve

Arjo Loeve is a staff lecturer of the BioMechanical Engineering department, faculty Mechanical Engineering, Delft University of Technology and a coordinator of the Co van Ledden Hulsebosch Center for forensic science and medicine. He has been doing research on, lecturing about and coordinating graduation projects on clinical technology since 2006 and on engineering for forensics since 2008. While doing his PhD on rigidifiable shaft-guides for flexible endoscopes he simultaneously started investigating and improving the reliability of trace collection methods used on rape victims. This led him to combine the fields of biomechanical engineering and forensics into the Engineering for Forensics research line. He has been working as expert investigator on various bacterial outbreak cases related to the design and use of medical devices, affecting world-wide changes in device design and hospital hygiene policies. He currently cooperates closely with national and international forensic institutes and the Dutch police to develop and improve forensic tools and methods. He is one of the founders of the “TUDelft Forensics” community for Forensic Engineering and Engineering for Forensics.

Michiel Schuurman

Michiel Schuurman is assistant professor at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of TU Delft and is lecturer in the Forensic Engineering Master course course. As a former senior Air Safety Investigator working for the Dutch Safety Board he has over 10 years of aircraft accident investigation experience. During that time he was involved in various major commercial and general aviation accidents in The Netherlands and in the rest of the world. This knowledge and experience is shared in the Forensic Engineering MOOC and the professional education course Air Safety Investigation. At TU Delft he conducts research in accident investigation methodology and safety related matters including drones. He is one of the founders of the “TUDelft Forensics” community for Forensic Engineering and Engineering for Forensics.

Karel Terwel

Karel Terwel is assistant professor Structural Design and Safety at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of TU Delft, and is coordinator Structural Safety at Delft Safety and Security Institute. He received his PhD on human and organizational factors influencing structural safety in 2014 at Delft University of Technology. Terwel is involved in several courses on structural design of lowrise and highrise buildings and a unique course on forensic structural engineering. His current research activities concentrate on structural damage of masonry buildings by earthquakes among other causes. Apart from that he investigated several (large) structural failures in The Netherlands. Terwel is vice-chair of Task group Forensic Structural Engineering of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. He is one of the founders of the “TUDelft Forensics” community for Forensic Engineering and Engineering for Forensics.

Naomi Schlösser

Naomi Schlösser is a graduate student Building Engineering at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of TU Delft. She has assisted during the development of the MOOC as teaching assistant and will moderate the course.

Judith van der Linde

Judith van der Linde is a graduate student Building Engineering at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of TU Delft. She will act as a moderator during the course.
