This course aims to help you be successful in your college studies, highlighting effective and practical strategies for study. These strategies, from note taking to active reading, from time management to understanding how you learn, will help you achieve your academic goals, and to allow you to make the most of your college education.

This online curriculum may be used in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, as a start-to-finish, self-directed online experience. We also invite you to utilize this resource as a library/toolkit of academic success strategies, a tool for flipped classroom pedagogy, or a companion text for on-the-ground transition courses.

Lecture Videos

The six-section course is comprised of short video lectures. The videos can be watched at various speeds and with or without closed captioning. Additionally, downloadable transcripts are available for each video lecture and run simultaneously to the left of the video. The videos will feature lectures delivered by Columbia University professors from the School of General Studies.

General Course Information & Help

edX Orientation

If you have not used the edX platform before, we encourage you to register for the edX DemoX.1 course to familiarize yourself with the platform and navigation. This self-paced course will provide helpful information you can use in this and any other edX learning experience. There is also a section that explains the edX mobile apps.

Obtaining a Verified Certificate

Learners in this course can choose to receive an edX Verified Certificate from edX and Columbia University. Learners on the Verified Certificate track will be asked to self-certify at the end of each section. The learner's attestation states that the learner has completed the section's course materials, including the lectures, readings, and activities. Learners must submit five of six attestations to receive a passing grade. See the edX Terms of Service & Honor Code
