DURATION

16 Weeks - Self-paced

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This 16-week Spanish language course is aimed at students who would like to learn conversational Spanish starting with Spanish basics. The course introduces everyday language and includes activities to practice all four language skills: reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension and speaking.

After completing this course, you will be prepared to introduce yourself, ask basic questions, and conduct a brief conversation in Spanish.

This course uses reference materials, cultural notes, grammar explanations, functions of language, etc. Students will be able to monitor their progress by taking a number of performance tests and a final achievement test.

The contents are organized into 2 parts: the 1st one includes weeks 1 to 9, where you will become acquainted with basic vocabulary organized into slowly progressing exercises. Once you finish this section you’ll do a short test (30%). The 2nd part comprises weeks 10 to 15. Here you’ll revise the contents from the 1st part but somewhat extended: some of the topics from the 1st part will appear again but this time with more vocabulary. Week 16 is devoted to doing a final test (70%).

SCHEDULE

The course is in Self-paced mode. This means that all course content is available from the beginning (as this is the first edition, we will open the first 9 weeks on the course starting date and the rest of the course one or two weeks later) and that it will continue being available and issuing certificates during a year or more.  The programmed pace is to do one unit per week, which should take you 4 hours a week to complete, but you can do the activities at your own pace .

It also means that the support in forums by the course team will be less than in a synchronous course, so you have to be prepared for longer response times.

You have a midterm exam in week 9 and a final exam the last week, and they will remain open until the closure of the course, programmed for the end of 2016.

GRADING POLICY

Only the midterm exam and the final exam are graded for the certificate, the questions after each video are there for you to practice and learn, but do not count towards the final grade. Depending on the question you have a different number of attempts to answer each question in midterm and final exam. You will get a certification if your score is 50% or more of the maximum possible score . To calculate the final mark the midterm is weighted 30% and the final exam 70%.

ACADEMIC POLICY

In this course we abide the "edX Honor Code" that can be read at the end of the edX terms of service
