Technical Notes

Whether you are new to the world of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) or frequently take online courses on edX or other providers, you will find that there are features and functions of "Engaging India" that are unique to this course. The most prominent feature is the ability to switch the course between the English and Hindi languages. As these are advanced functions, you may discover that sometimes things just don’t work. The following are suggestions that should help resolve any such problems.

Internet Browser:
We recommend using the latest version of the Google Chrome browser, as during testing "Engaging India" we have found Chrome to have shown the best results. Regardless of which internet browser you use, if you are experiencing difficulties, we recommend updating your browser to the latest version.

Switching Between English and Hindi:
The majority of the text of this course can be switched between Hindi and English. To do so simply click on the "हिन्दी में पढ़ें" or "Switch to English" button on a page (like the one above). Once you click on the button, your choice will be remembered for all subsequent pages of the course that you visit but you can change the language back by clicking the button again.

Unfortunately, some elements of the course, such as quizes and discussions, cannot be switched. Where this is the case, and where feasible (for example, we do not have the resources to translate discussion forum submissions), Hindi and English text are presented side by side, separated by a "/" character.

Font:
How fonts are displayed in the edX platform depends on the fonts installed on your computer. In order to display the Hindi text correctly in "Engaging India", we recommend installing the "Sanskrit 2003" font on your computer.

Video/Audio:
Multimedia content for "Engaging India" is available in several different formats for ease of access. However, how quickly these resources are accessed depends on the speed of the internet connection to the device being used to access them, so it may vary considerably. Videos can be viewed directly from course pages using the embedded Youtube copy. In addition, each video is available to download in 720p (larger file size), 480p (smaller file size) and MP3 audio format. The downloadable videos include subtitles that can be switched on and off in your media player. In addition, English and Hindi transcripts can be downloaded for each video.

Mobile Devices:
The edX Course Platform is not designed for use on mobile devices. Some parts of "Engaging India" will be accessible and useable on mobile devices, but other parts may experience problems. It is recommended to use a desktop or laptop computer (Windows or MacOS) to access "Engaging India".
